5 Easy Ways to Give Your Kitchen Designer Wow!

November 15, 2009 By: admin Category: Uncategorized

kitchen-designA beautiful kitchen is the heart of any home (even for those of us who spend most of our cooking time around the microwave!) Time spent together in the kitchen can bring a family closer together and make wonderful memories (although my own memories of doing dishes as a teenager are less than pleasant – something about dishwater being *disgusting!*) Turning your plain kitchen into something special isn*t as hard as you might think. Here are a few simple ideas which can make your kitchen a designer showcase.

1. To give your cabinets a special flair, use three different stains. Use one lighter stain on the upper cabinets, one slightly darker on the drawers and an even darker one on the bottom cabinets. Add a little pigment in a primary color (red, blue or yellow) to add an additional dimension and a little *pop.*

2. To add a little flair, take out a few drawers and insert low baskets in their place. You will probably have to remove the middle drawer slide or side slides, but that is easily done with a screwdriver.

3. Want to update your backsplash? Use beadboard! Have your local home improvement store cut it to length and attach with nails or adhesive.

4. Tired cabinet doors? Cut out the middle of the doors, leaving a two inch edge all around. Stale fabric panels to the back of the doors. Cover the staples with fabric trim glued with a hot glue gun. You can use any fabric from elegant to country, stripes to plaid, or gingham to quilted. (more…)

The Right Kitchen Design Ideas Can Make All the Difference

If you are thinking about changing up the look of your kitchen, you are going to need some kitchen design ideas to get you started. There are a lot of components to your kitchen and you are going to have to pull them all together to get it exactly the way you want it. From the layout to the components, it is time to get to work.

The layout is the primary starting point for you. It would be great to design a house from scratch, but if you have an existing layout, you may be limited by how things are already positioned unless you want to put out some serious cash to get your lines moved. However, there are plenty of things that you can do to get it where you want.

Your cooking tools are going to need to be accounted for right away. If you are challenged for space, think about using the ceiling and walls for storage. You can erect a beautiful spice rack with some designer jars to get your spices out of the cabinets and if you have nice pots, think about putting a pot rack mounted on the ceiling. Copper pots look great hanging from the ceiling.

If you have kids, you are going to need to take a few things into consideration. You know they are going to want to help you out so you need to make sure that they have access to the counter space, but at the same time you need to make sure that anything that is within their reach will not do them any harm. Get the outlets covered and keep that area away from any dangerous appliances.

One of the main factors in having a successful kitchen design is where you keep the infamous work triangle. This is the area that you will use the most between the fridge, the oven and the sink. This area should be kept clear and out of the high traffic zones. Keep the pantry where the snacks are as far away from this as you can so the kids don’t get in your way in the middle of dinner getting prepared.

If you are looking to make your kitchen more energy efficient, now is the time. You can replace those old energy hogs with more efficient appliances and replace the cabinets with ones that are made out of recyclable material. There plenty of opportunities in the kitchen that will allow you to get your kitchen in “green” shape.

Cleaning up your kitchen is something that you are going to have to do each and every day and if you want it to be easy, pay attention to the materials that you are using. An all natural stone countertop will look great, but how do you expect to get the kids peanut butter and jelly out of the nooks and crannies?

While you may think that you are in over your head at times, everything will eventually come together. With so many pieces to the puzzle, you need to start in the middle and figure it out from there. Figure out the things that you cannot change first and then everything else will just fit into place.
